CVC, a global private markets manager, and Tabreed have partnered to acquire PAL Cooling Holding from Abu Dhabi’s Multiply Group. The transaction, valued at US $1.035bn, includes three long-term concessions in the Abu Dhabi main island area and five on Al Reem Island. These actions are serviced by five existing, sustainable district cooling plants and associated networks in Abu Dhabi, with a combined capacity of 182,000 refrigeration tons (RT) as of December 2024.

The deal was signed during a ceremony at Multiply’s Abu Dhabi headquarters by Samia Bouazza, Group CEO and Managing Director of Multiply Group, Khalid Al Marzooqi, Chief Executive Officer of Tabreed and Özgür Önder, Head of CVC Middle East, in the presence of Tabreed’s Chairman, Dr Bakheet Al Katheeri.

An additional plant is currently under construction, and three more are in the planning phase. Together, these nine plants and eight concessions are expected to represent 600,000RT. CVC DIF’s investment focus and experience spans key sectors including energy transition, digital infrastructure, utilities and transport, areas that are critical to Tabreed’s strategic vision. Its expertise and investment approach makes CVC DIF an ideal partner for a transformative project of this scale, said a statement.

“Tabreed is always looking to the future and ensuring we remain agile. The acquisition of PAL Cooling with CVC DIF aligns perfectly with our strategic objectives and readiness to adapt to Abu Dhabi’s ambitious real estate projects. This year has been historic for Tabreed, with ventures like our Palm Jebel Ali JV and continued growth in Abu Dhabi. These steps position us to meet the UAE’s rising demand for sustainable cooling, driven by population growth and decarbonisation targets,” said Dr Bakheet.

Gijs Voskuyl, Managing Partner at CVC DIF added, “PAL Cooling services its clients under long-term, concession-based contracts, in a fast-growing urban environment. The company has a strong track record of developing and constructing high-quality and electrified district cooling plants to deliver reliable, energy-efficient cooling solutions. Building on CVC DIF’s long-term track record in the sector, we are delighted to partner with Tabreed, a leading district cooling company in the Middle East. Together with our partners, we are convinced that PAL Cooling is a high-quality investment that will provide our investors with solid returns, while offering the potential for long-term growth and sustainable value creation.”

Önder noted, “Our partnership with Tabreed, a regional leader with deep industry expertise, aligns perfectly with CVC’s commitment to investing in the UAE, backing mission-critical businesses that support sustainable development across the country.”

Al Marzooqi added, “This is turning out to be a truly pivotal year for Tabreed. As we enter a new phase of growth in Abu Dhabi alongside partners, CVC DIF, the benefits brought by this acquisition will be substantial. As part of Tabreed’s portfolio, these additional plants will be operated and maintained by the world’s leading experts in sustainable cooling. The acquisition also serves to strengthen our already investment-grade status with safe, long-term concession agreements and assured future growth, evidenced by current and planned developments on Reem Island.”

Bouazza commented, “The monetisation of PAL Cooling Holding is a deliberate step in our portfolio optimisation strategy, aimed at delivering superior returns to our shareholders. It reflects our ability to realise significant value from our assets, while enhancing liquidity to fuel Multiply Group’s next phase of growth – both across our core verticals and on the global stage.”

The construction equipment industry’s leading lights gathered at the Ritz-Carlton JBR last night for the fourth annual Construction Machinery Middle East Awards, as the sector’s top innovators, rental partners, and manufacturers were honoured for their achievements over the past 12 months.

Hosted by CMME magazine and CPI Trade Media, the sold-out gala brought together more than 200 senior professionals from across the region’s construction, infrastructure, and heavy machinery sectors. With over 140 nominations submitted across more than 30 categories, the 2025 edition marked the biggest and most competitive CMME Awards yet.

Speaking during the opening address, Stephen White, Head of Content at Construction Machinery ME, said the awards served as a critical platform for recognising the region’s ongoing transformation.

“This industry continues to prove it’s not just keeping pace — it’s setting the pace. Behind every innovation and successful project are the people, teams, and companies driving real progress in how the Middle East builds. Tonight is about them.”

Highlights from the evening included multiple wins for established industry names JLG Industries, Johnson Arabia, and Al Marwan Machinery, with joint awards issued in several categories to reflect the depth of competition.

And there was also success for newer innovators in the market such as Sinoboom, winner of the Newcomer of the Year award, and SpiderPlus which was recognised for its technological prowess.

In the Rental categories, Dayim Equipment Rental was named Access Rental Company of the Year, while Al Marwan Machinery took home the Heavy and Medium Rental Company of the Year award. Innovation was front and centre, with Dingli receiving the Manufacturer Innovation of the Year award for its AWP Innovation Programme, and Al Marwan Machinery and MYCRANE jointly recognised for Local Innovation of the Year. Judges praised the former’s amphibious excavators, engineered in the UAE, and the latter’s digital crane rental platform — both described as “regionally rooted and globally relevant.”

In the machinery categories, Volvo’s A40 Articulated Hauler and DEVELON’s DX1000LC-7 Crawler Excavator shared Earth Moving Machinery of the Year, while Komatsu’s D155-6R Bulldozer won Bulldozer of the Year. One of the most anticipated moments of the night was the announcement of the Special Contribution Award, which went to Al Shirawi Enterprises Group. Saudi Global Ports Group (SGP) has announced that its subsidiary – Modern Port Services Company (MPS) – has been awarded four 20-year concession agreements by the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) to operate multipurpose terminals along Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Coast. The terminals will be located at King Abdulaziz Port Dammam (KAPD), Jubail Commercial Port (JCP), King Fahad Industrial Port Jubail (KFIP), and Ras Al Khair Port (RAK).

SGP currently operates container terminals at KAPD and manages the rail intermodal Riyadh Dry Port Ecosystem, which includes the Riyadh Dry Port, Riyadh Empty Yard, and Dammam Empty Container Yard. Additionally, SGP is actively involved in developing the Dammam Integrated Logistics Zone. In 2024, SGP handled over four million TEUs across its seaports and inland terminals, solidifying its position as a leading player in the industry. In response to these deals, SGP plans to invest over US $187mn in the upgradation of these terminals and the purchase of new equipment, said a statement.

Abdullah Al Zamil, Chairman of the Board, and Vice Chairman Bakr AlMuhanna added, “SGP, as one of the national champions for ports and logistics in Saudi Arabia, is proud to be entrusted with this opportunity to nurture and grow the four multipurpose terminals along the Eastern Coast of Saudi Arabia. We will strive to provide the same reliability, integration and spirit of innovation at the multipurpose terminals as we have done so for the container terminals at KAPD, the Riyadh Dry Port Ecosystem and DILZ. We are grateful to Mawani for entrusting SGP with these concessions. The agreement between SGP and Mawani was pivotal in driving economic diversification under Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. By integrating and modernising key terminals, SGP, together with its technical partner, PSA International, brings their expertise to enhance supply chain efficiency, support critical mega projects, and strengthen the Kingdom’s position as a global logistics hub.”

The concession agreements were signed by Saudi Global Ports Group CEO Rob Harrison and the Acting President of Mawani Mazen bin Ahmed Al Turki, in the presence of Minister of Transport and Logistics Services Saleh Al Jasser, the Chairman of Board of Saudi Global Ports Eng. Abdullah Al Zamil and Vice Chairman Bakr AlMuhanna.

“SGP is committed to fostering innovation, sustainability, and local talent development to unlock long-term value in developing a transformative ports and logistics sector and in building a resilient, future-ready economy,” said Regional CEO Europe & Mediterranean and Middle East South Asia, PSA International, Vincent Ng. “We are proud to be alongside Saudi Arabia’s growth journey for over 10 years. We are excited to continue to work alongside PIF, Mawani and other stakeholders in the Kingdom, supporting SGP with our global expertise and network as it expands its ecosystem to include capabilities that can bring new and differentiated value to the Kingdom’s ports and logistics sector,” he added.

SGP with the support of its technical partner PSA International will continue its commitment to the professional development of its workforce in Saudi Arabia. They will tailor training programs for the existing and new workforce at all the terminals.

Saudi General Petroleum aims to integrate its four multipurpose terminals with its existing operations across Dammam and Riyadh. This integration will transform the terminals into more efficient and resilient gateways, supporting the robust growth in the Kingdom. These gateways will be crucial for the ongoing and upcoming mega projects in the country. The training program aims to equip participants with best practices in safety, operations, and sustainability, drawing from PSA International’s successful experiences in developing multipurpose terminals globally.
